Tying instructions

  1. Attach thread near the eye.

  2. Wrap thread down the shank a few turns and trim the waste.

  3. Tie in a furnace hen hackle by the stem, with the feather extending rearward. Trim the waste.

  4. Tie in dark copper wire at the tie-in point for the hackle.

  5. Wrap the thread down to the end of the shank, keeping the wire underneath.

  6. Tie in Lady Amherst tippet dyed hot orange for the tail, so that the second black bar just shows.

  7. Wrap the thread forward to the tie-in point for the hackle.

  8. Wrap the copper wire forward in touching turns to the tie-in point for the hackle, angling it slightly back so each turn slides off the preceding one.

  9. Tie off the wire and trim the excess.

  10. Tie in a single peacock herl by the tip.

  11. Wrap the peacock herl forward to form the thorax. Tie off and trim the waste.

  12. Clip on hackle pliers to the furnace hen hackle.

  13. Wrap the hackle forward to form the collar, 3 turns is ample. Tie off and trim the waste.

  14. Tie in a white CDC feather, bunching up the tip, with the length just past the length of the body. Tie down tightly and trim the waste.

  15. Tidy up the head with thread wraps.

  16. Finish with a three-turn whip finish, and trim the thread.
