Tying instructions
Secure the hook in the vise. Start black thread behind the eye and wrap to the bend.
Tie in a short piece of fine gold tinsel at the bend. Wrap 3-4 turns for the tag and tie off.
Select 3-4 peacock herls and tie in at the bend, just ahead of the tag.
Twist the herls with the thread to form a reinforced rope.
Wrap the herl body forward to the 1/3 point behind the eye. Tie off and trim.
Select a dark brown hen hackle feather. Strip one side or fold the fibers rearward.
Tie in the hackle just ahead of the body. Wrap 2-3 turns. Tie off and trim.
Stroke all hackle fibers rearward and downward. Take a few thread wraps to hold them back.
Select matching dark gray mallard wing quill segments. Tie them in flat over the body with curved sides facing in.
Secure the wings with tight wraps. Trim butt ends.
Build a small thread head. Whip finish and apply head cement.
