Tying instructions

  1. Secure hook in vise and start thread a small distance behind the eye.

  2. Wrap thread back to the bend.

  3. Select a sparse bunch of Cock de Leon fibers, even the tips, and tie in at the bend. The tail should extend one shank-length.

  4. Advance thread forward to the point where the wing post will be tied in (about 1/3 of the way back from the eye).

  5. Clip the excess tail material.

  6. Apply a small amount of wax to the thread.

  7. Clean, stack, and measure a bunch of calf body hair to the length of the hook shank.

  8. Tie in the calf body hair as a wing post, with the tips pointing upward.

  9. Clip the excess wing post material at an angle.

  10. Apply a small amount of head cement to the base of the wing post.

  11. Wrap thread in an open spiral back to the tail base.

  12. Apply a small amount of purple SLF dubbing to the thread.

  13. Dub the body forward to the wing post.

  14. Select a March Brown dyed grizzle hackle and tie it in at the base of the wing post.

  15. Wrap the hackle around the wing post, making sure to go under all the hackle fibers.

  16. Tie off the hackle and clip the excess.

  17. Form a thread head and whip finish.

  18. Clip the thread and apply a small amount of head cement to the head.
