Tying instructions

  1. Secure the hook in the vise.

  2. Start the thread just behind the eye, leaving a tag end to form the rib.

  3. Wrap the thread to what seems to be half the hook shank, well back of where you would normally tie in a deer hair wing.

  4. Clip a small bunch of deer hair and place it in a hair stacker.

  5. Even the tips in the hair stacker.

  6. Hold the hair with the tips pointing forward, remove the bottom half of the stacker.

  7. Tie in the deer hair wing, about shank length, with 2.5 turns, and tighten up.

  8. Tighten further for a few turns, then trim the butts very short, leaving the tag end intact.

  9. Finish off the butts, tidying it up.

  10. Run the thread well into the bend.

  11. Tease out a fairly slender amount of dyed olive hare dubbing.

  12. Dub the abdomen onto the thread as a noodle, with a slight taper.

  13. Slide the dubbing into place and start wrapping the abdomen.

  14. Run the dubbing all the way up to the base of the wing.

  15. Lift the wing and rib the abdomen with the tag end of the tying thread.

  16. Make a final turn at the back and cut under the wing, coming in front.

  17. Tie off the thread and trim the waste.

  18. Shape the wing in a slight arc or fan.
