Tying instructions
Secure the rear hook (Gamakatsu B10s #4) in the vise and start thread behind the eye.
Tie in tan marabou for the tail, using two sparse plumes to create a full tail. The tail should extend one shank length beyond the bend.
Lash the marabou butts to the hook shank to fill out the underbody.
Wrap the thread forward near the eye of the hook, Dub the hook shank with Hareline Superfine Dry Fly Dubbin (Sulphur Orange) to create the body.
Spiral the dubbing backwards to the rear hook shank, with the majority of the dubbing underneath where the feathers will be.
Strip the fluff from the base of a mallard flank feather. (Natural for bottom, wood duck for sides and top)
Pinch in a clump of the mallard flank feather at the tie-in point, with a couple solid wraps, pull it back, and wrap in front. Clip off the excess.
Repeat the previous step, adding clumps of appropriate colored mallard flank feather all the way around the hook shank.
It should take 4-5 clumps to get all the way around the hook shank.
Tie in natrual wood duck feather by the tip, pulling back the side fibers and tying in the tip.
Palmer feather onto hook shank. Then repeat with Natural Wood duck color, and one more natural. This should fill your hook shank.
Tie off the thread and remove the hook from the vise.
Slide the large copper conehead onto the hook. Secure the front hook (Gamakatsu B10s #2) in the vise.
Wrap 15 wraps of .025" lead wire onto the front half of the hook shank to create a taper.
Tie in the back hook to the front hook using 19-strand Beadaloon wire and a 6mm red-orange acrylic bead. Make sure to double wire back as well as superglue to ensure connection is strong.
Separate the two strands of the Beadaloon wire and lash them down to the hook shank.
Add a small amount of tan marabou to fill in the space around the bead.
Dub roughly half of the hook shank with Hareline Superfine Dry Fly Dubbin (Sulphur Orange).
Pinch in clumps of mallard flank feather, alternating between wood duck dyed color and natural white color, to fill in the back half of the shank. Same color scheme (Wood duck top and sides, natural bottom).
Repeat process as before until half hook shank is full. Then repeat palmering steps, ensuring you alternate and end on a natural wood duck feather.
Dub on small head of superfine dubbing.
Tie in the colored clumps (side/top Wood Duck, Bottom Natural) to finish off the fly and keep the coloring.
Whip finish and Head cement if desired.
