Tying instructions

  1. Secure the hook in the vise and attach the thread a little back from the eye.

  2. Wrap the thread down the hook shank a few turns and trim the waste.

  3. Flatten the thread to make a slender abdomen.

  4. Wrap the thread in a single layer to the bend of the hook.

  5. Spin the bobbin holder to tighten and cord the thread.

  6. Spiral the corded thread forward in close, even turns to about 1/3 of the way up the shank to create a ribbing effect.

  7. Select a white or cream set of hackle barbs from a large feather, about a dozen or so.

  8. Even the tips of the hackle barbs and bunch them up.

  9. Trim the wing to length so it does not extend past the bend of the hook.

  10. Tie in the wing at the 1/3 point on top of the hook shank.

  11. Split the thread with a needle.

  12. Insert a sparse mixture of black, claret, and a little red seal's fur (or African Goat) into the split thread.

  13. Spin the bobbin holder to tighten and create a dubbing rope.

  14. Wrap the dubbing rope forward to create a sparse hackle collar.

  15. Create a bit of a hackle with the seal's fur.

  16. Complete the fly with a three-turn whip finish.

  17. Trim away the waste seal's fur.

  18. Pull all the seal's fur forward and roughly snip it to get rid of overly long strands.
