Tying instructions

  1. Slide two copper tungsten beads onto the hook shank, small hole toward the hook eye.

  2. Start the red thread just behind the second bead.

  3. Wrap the thread back to the bend.

  4. Select 8-10 cock de Leon hen saddle fibers.

  5. Draw the fibers out at a right angle to the stem so the tips become even.

  6. Tie in the tail at the bend with a single turn of thread.

  7. Tie in the black thread for ribbing, and run the tag end down the hook shank.

  8. Wrap the red thread forward over the thread and tail butts to the back of the beads, forming a tapered body.

  9. Wrap the black thread forward in 4-5 evenly spaced turns to the back of the beads.

  10. Tie off the black thread.

  11. Clip the excess.

  12. Dub mahogany superfine dubbing onto the thread.

  13. Wrap the dubbing to fill the gap between the beads.

  14. Tie in the medium opal mirage tinsel on edge along the near side of the hook.

  15. Pull the tinsel over the top of the thorax and tie down.

  16. Clip the excess tinsel.

  17. Select a clump of cock de Leon hen saddle fibers.

  18. Divide the fibers in half.

  19. Tie in the legs on either side of the hook, tips extending to the point of the hook.

  20. Trim the butts.

  21. Whip finish the thread behind the beads.

  22. Clip the thread.

  23. Apply a drop of Solarez Thick Hard Formula UV Resin to the wingcase and back of the front bead.

  24. Sweep the resin back to the base of the tail.

  25. Sweep the resin forward to the back of the front bead, forming a teardrop shape.

  26. Cure with a UV lamp.
