Tying instructions

  1. Secure the hook in the vise and attach the thread behind the eye.

  2. Tie in the gold oval tinsel at the tie-in point and wrap the thread down the shank to the bend, keeping the tinsel underneath.

  3. Tie in a clump of grey squirrel at the bend for the abdomen.

  4. Wrap the grey squirrel forward to form a slightly tapered abdomen, ending about 1/3 of the way back from the eye.

  5. Counter-wrap the gold tinsel forward to create a segmented body and tie off.

  6. Trim away the excess grey squirrel.

  7. Select a well-marked brown partridge feather and tie it in by the stem.

  8. Clip the excess partridge stem.

  9. Wrap the partridge hackle forward to form the legs.

  10. Cut through the hackle with the thread and angle the legs back slightly.

  11. Flatten the thread with a dubbing needle.

  12. Split the thread with a dubbing needle.

  13. Insert fox squirrel dubbing into the split thread.

  14. Spin the thread to create a dubbing noodle.

  15. Wrap the dubbing noodle forward to create a spiky thorax.

  16. Tie off the fox squirrel dubbing at the back of the eye.

  17. Finish the fly with a three-turn whip finish.
