Tying instructions

  1. Secure the hook in the vise. Start black thread at the bend.

  2. Select a small bunch of dark deer hair for the tail. Stack and measure to one shank-length. Tie in at the bend.

  3. Trim the butt ends at an angle.

  4. Select a small bunch of natural deer hair. Spin it around the hook shank at the bend.

  5. Pack the spun hair tightly rearward. Continue spinning and packing additional bunches until the body covers the rear 2/3 of the shank.

  6. Trim the spun deer hair body into a cigar shape — rounded on top, flat on the bottom.

  7. Advance the thread to the 1/3 point behind the eye.

  8. Select two matched dark dun hen hackle tips or a small bunch of calf tail for the wings. Tie in upright.

  9. Separate the wings with figure-eight wraps if using paired tips.

  10. Tie in a dark dun or grizzly hackle feather. Wrap 3-4 turns behind and 2-3 turns in front of the wings.

  11. Tie off the hackle and trim. Build a small thread head.

  12. Whip finish and apply head cement.
