Tying instructions
Secure the hook in the vise. Start gray thread behind the eye.
Wrap thread rearward to the bend, building a smooth base.
Tie in 8-10 medium dun hackle fibers at the bend for the tail, one shank-length long.
Select matching segments from left and right mallard wing quills for the wings.
Tie in the quill segments upright at the 2/3 point, curved sides facing each other.
Stand the wings with a thread dam and separate with figure-eight wraps.
Dub a thin noodle of muskrat fur onto the thread.
Wrap the dubbed body from the tail to the wings, forming a slight taper.
Tie in a medium dun hackle behind the wings. Wrap 2-3 turns behind and in front of the wings.
Tie off the hackle and trim. Build a small thread head.
Whip finish and apply head cement.
