Tying instructions

  1. Secure the hook in the vise.

  2. Start the thread a couple eye-lengths back from the hook eye.

  3. Wrap the thread back about halfway down the bend, keeping the thread as flat and smooth as possible.

  4. Strip the fluff off the bottom of an India Hen Saddle feather.

  5. Pull out a small clump of fibers, about 10-12, at a right angle so their tips become even.

  6. Grab that clump and pull the feather away, so you have a short little bunch.

  7. Tie in the tail at the bend, about a half shank long.

  8. Wrap forward over the butt ends, keeping them on top of the hook as you go.

  9. Wrap back up to about where you started, and trim the stub ends out.

  10. Cut two strands of dark brown Super Hair and one strand of black Super Hair, cutting the ends so they are square.

  11. Catch these just at the front end on the near side of the hook, and draw them down to length.

  12. Anchor them in place.

  13. Wrap back over them all the way back to the base of the tail, keeping the thread as flat and smooth as possible.

  14. Come forward again, building a little more of a taper on this front end.

  15. Tie off the Super Hair.

  16. Tie in a piece of Medium Opal Mirage Tinsel with the curve down.

  17. Wrap down over the stub ends to lock that in place.

  18. Overlap back to about 60/40, running the abdomen and thorax together.

  19. Whip finish the white thread and clip it out.

  20. Start the black thread just in front of where you tied off the white.

  21. Tie in some Gray Flouro Fiber for the wingcase and legs.

  22. Pull the Flouro Fiber forward and pull it taut, bringing the thread over the top, keeping the Flouro Fiber tight so it holds the thread up off of the hook.

  23. Pull straight down on the thread to center that wingcase, and lock it in with one more turn.

  24. Divide the butt ends, six to a side, and roll them in your fingers to help divide them.

  25. Pull the near side back just slightly low on the hook, and let your thread drag it up to inline with the shank, and get a turn or two.

  26. On the far side, hold just a bit high so the thread drags it down.

  27. Cover those butt ends.

  28. Whip finish right on top.

  29. Clip the thread out.

  30. Trim the legs just about a scissor blade width longer than the wingcase.

  31. Apply a little Solarez Thin Hard UV Resin on a short needle bodkin.

  32. Sweep the legs down and put this drop down just on the top of the wingcase, bouncing the needle all the way back to the bend, and then sweep forward.

  33. Work back and forth, making sure you coat the entire upper surface, and get up onto the thread head to get a tear drop shape going.

  34. Cook that with a UV lamp.
