Tying instructions

  1. Secure the hook in the vise. Start thread at the rear of the hook shank near the bend.

  2. Select a small bunch of natural deer hair. Clean out underfur.

  3. Hold the deer hair on top of the shank and make 2 loose wraps, then tighten to spin the hair around the shank.

  4. Use your fingers to push the spun deer hair rearward tightly, then advance the thread forward.

  5. Repeat spinning deer hair bunches, packing each tightly against the previous one, until you reach the 1/4 point behind the eye.

  6. Tie off the thread temporarily with a half hitch.

  7. Remove the fly from the vise and trim the deer hair body into a tent-wing caddis shape — flat on the bottom, peaked on top like an inverted V.

  8. Return the fly to the vise. Reattach thread at the head area.

  9. Tie in a brown hackle feather at the head. Wrap 3-4 turns of hackle and tie off.

  10. Optionally, tie in two brown hackle stems extending rearward as antennae.

  11. Build a small thread head. Whip finish and apply head cement.

  12. Trim any stray deer hair fibers for a clean silhouette.
